*Το χιόνι!❄️ >> The snow!

Updated: Jul 18

Γεια σε όλους!

( ya se òlous )

Hi to all!

Ελπίζω να είχατε έναν καλό Ιανούαριο.

( elpízo na ìhate ènan kalò Ianouàrio )

(I) hope that (you:plural) had a good January.

Το χιόνι (to hiòni) ~ Snow

Στην Ελλάδα, τον Ιανουάριο είχαμε πολύ χιόνι.

( stin Elàda, ton Ianuàrio íhame polí hiòni )

In Greece, in January (we) had a lot of snow.

Δηλαδή, χιόνισε πολύ!

( diladì, hiònise polì )

So to speak, (it) snowed a lot!

το χιόνι (to hiòni) : the snow

τα χιόνια (ta hiònia) : the snow plural can also be used exactly in the same way

χιονίζει (hionìzi) : it is snowing

Προσοχή! Attention!

Υπάρχει μία έκφραση στα Ελληνικά.

( ipàrhi mìa èkfrasi sta Elinikà )

There is an expression in Greek.

"...Σαν τα χιόνια..." : (San ta hiònia) : <Like the snow> = Long time no see

If you hear this expression, it addresses to someone that somebody else didn't see for a long time, or someone who comes back after a long time of absence, or even as a playful way to tell someone that it felt like 'long time no see'.

Clearly, the reason why we use this expression in Greek has to do with the fact that we do not see snow very often. Perhaps in countries like Scotland, Sweden, Finland, this same expression "Σαν τα χιόνια..." would be used to show that "we are annoyed to see someone everyday" :)

Well, if this happens, please let me know in the comments below ;)
